Tale of the Tape- 3rd Round Playoff Matchups

The last day of November and Union County has two teams still competing for a state football title. Porter Ridge and Weddington both play on the road tonight in the state quarterfinals. Porter Ridge vs. West Meck in a 4A contest and in a 3AA matchup, Weddington will take on Watauga.

When you take a quick scan over the statistical matchups, you see that our two county squads face opponents tonight with potent offensive attacks. West Meck's offensive productivity comes via the air and Watauga via a strong running game.

If the Porter Ridge running game is effective, that should eat up possession time and keep a West Meck passing game off the field and disturb its timing in the process which is always critical in the success of a passing game.  Offensively, last week the Pirates played their most balanced game of the season. Granted the Page defense might have forced the issue, but it was nice to see wrinkles in the offense that allowed for such productivity. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues tonight.

Porter Ridge is 5-1 on the road, and I imagine an impressive contingent from Pirate nation making the 40-minute road trip to transform West Meck's Stadium to "The Boneyard West" tonight.

Weddington will face a tough test in Boone tonight against a Watauga team that lives on the ground. The defense has passed every test laid out in front of them all season other than their one loss to one of the state's strongest football programs in Charlotte Catholic. The Warriors have skill players on both sides of the ball, they are all football smart and rarely caught out of position.

Interesting fact- Weddington is 6-0 all-time vs. 828 teams. That's to say that Weddington is undefeated all-time (Home & Road) against teams that play in the 828 area road. Four out of the six Warrior wins have come on the road.

Included in the stat comparisons below, you will also see the picks of Brian Simmons. Last week Brian was 2-of-4 (50.0%) on picking winners, and against the spread, he was 1-3 (25%). Overall, in the postseason, Simmons is 6-4 (60.0%) picking winners and 4-5 (44.4%) against the spread.
