The Enquirer-Journal reported on Friday night that Piedmont's Luke Hyatt has resigned as head football coach based on a source within the Piedmont athletic department.
Hyatt took over the Panther program four years ago and finished with a 6-6 record including a first-round loss against Crest in the 3AA playoffs. The last three years were not as kind as Piedmont failed to make a playoff appearance off a combined record of 8-25.
You will not meet a finer man. Coach Hyatt always made himself available to me to discuss his program and his players. Unfortunately, he along with staff endured some tough months this past season, and no coach or staff deserves that at the high school level.
Remember, Hyatt took over the first full season in 2015, hired to replace Ron Massey who passed away in October 2014. I cannot think of many men who could have stepped into that awkward situation to lead the program and bring players together. Wins and losses at the high school level often cloud our vision of what's most important.
