Weddington defeated Crest, 31-21, on Wednesday night in a battle of 3A football powers. Both teams have won recent state championships; Weddington in 2016 and Crest in 2014 & 2015.
The Weddington defense was dominant in the first half and continued to get consistent pressure in the Crest backfield keeping the explosive Chargers offense in check. Crest entered the night averaging 32 points per game and 412 yards of offense.
Weddington, led by sophomore backup quarterback, Dante Casciola played well in the clutch driving his team back from two-second half deficits and scoring the game’s first touchdown in the first half.
Casciola has started over the last two weeks in place of Whitner Litton who was not on the sideline on Wednesday or last week at East Meck.
Warriors athletic director Mike Hart explained, ”A student-athlete was found to be in violation of a team policy.” Hart continued, ”We are handling the situation in alignment with UCPS protocol."
Casciola was 12-of-21 passing for 173 yards with one touchdown.
Senior James Shipley led all receivers with four catches for 65 yards.
Will Shipley rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown along with 48 receiving yards on three catches. The sophomore also hauled in a first-half interception that led to Weddington’s first TD.
This was the third meeting between the two teams over the previous three seasons with Weddington coming out on the shortened with two heartbreaking losses. In 2015, a double-overtime loss in the state semis and last season a one-point loss early in the regular season.
