Monroe Redhawks 2018 Season Preview

By Tim Winters, 08/06/18, 8:00AM EDT

Last season Monroe (5-7 overall) moved up from 2A to 3A, suffered a ton of critical injuries and their first losing season since 2006.

The Redhawks wrapped up Southern Carolina Conference play with a 2-5 mark.

Monroe loses their top running back, McKinley Nelson, to graduation along with Tyshon Houston (WR), Devon Cruz (OL), Justin Crowder (DL) and defensive back, Jonathan Phillips.

Key Redhawks returning for the 2018 campaign will be quarterback Trey Shepherd, JahTwan Stafford (RB), wide receivers, Max Helms and Salen Streater along with linebackers, Elijah Bost and Chris Colon.

One addition to the roster that has been the talk of the offseason is that of wideout, Shaleak Knotts, the younger brother of Braxton Knotts who helped lead Monroe to their first state championship in 2015.

I had the opportunity to chat with Coach Johnny Sowell after practice last week to discuss upcoming 2018 season. Sowell was just named the 2019 West head coach in the East-West football game.
