Sam Howell, the most sought-after high school football player in the history of Union County, has verbally committed to Florida State University.

At 7:30 PM last night, Howell, the four-star quarterback from Sun Valley High School tweeted his intentions to a captive audience of D1 schools, recruiters and of course family, friends and teammates.

Howell kept everyone guessing right to the very end regarding his decision. One thing for sure, if this football thing doesn’t work out, Sam has a real shot on the world poker tour as he played all his cards close to the vest.

The decision to head to Tallahassee is a smart one. Howell has a real shot at starting from day one and has an offensive-minded head coach, Willie Taggart and an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Walt Bell who was the first to offer Howell when Bell was the OC and QB coach at Maryland.

The bond created between Bell and Howell two years ago set the foundation for Sam’s commitment. A side note to all aspiring student-athletes and a real-life takeaway from Sam’s decision- life is about connections and relationships.

We’ve been fortunate to see such a talent play on Saturday afternoons and then perform on Friday Nights. We have one more year to take to take it all in before he departs this county and takes his next step at FSU.

Howell is currently the all-time county leader in career passing yards with 10, 175 yards and career touchdowns with 109 and a senior year to pad those impressive numbers.

It wasn’t that long ago that I got my first look at Sam playing in the third game of his freshman year at Rocky River High School.

Granted it was a hard road loss, 46-39, but it was easy to see the all-around ability and skill set that Howell possessed as he threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one. Here are some of those game highlights that display Howell's arm strength, running ability and his capacity to execute under pressure.
