Sun Valley High School football has reached the state semifinals football for the first time with their 27-20 win over Mount Tabor on Friday night.
The final score doesn’t do justice to just how seemingly in control Sun Valley was against Mount Tabor. The Spartans defense held Tabor to eight first downs and in two goal-to-go scenarios buckled down and surrendered zero points.
Offensively, the line was getting a great push all night, and as a result, Sun Valley backs collectively rushed for a three-game playoff high, 259 yards on 60 carries.
Sun Valley will now play #2 A.C. Reynolds Rockets (13-1), a team that last played the Spartans in the first round of the 2013 playoffs. The Rockets got the best of Sun Valley on that evening, 65-14. That was a different time, and those Spartans were a different team.
These Spartans are on a historic run, one they hope runs through Asheville all the way to a state championship game in Durham on December 9.
