Weddington defeated Hunter Huss, 31-13 and will now play in their fifth consecutive state quarterfinal game on Friday where they will be on the road against Charlotte Catholic.
Weddington led by freshman running back Will Shipley scored the game’s first points when he burst up the middle and ran 75 yards to the end zone late in the first half. Shipley led all backs on the ground with 166 yards on 15 carries.
Late in the fourth quarter, a Huss touchdown pulled the Huskies within four points of Weddington at 17-13. On the ensuing kickoff, Will’s older brother James split the coverage and sprinted 85 yards into the end zone to put Weddington up 24-13 with 5:15 remaining in the game.
Weddington senior linebacker Eamon Murphy scored the game’s last points with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Weddington met Catholic earlier this season in conference play at home on September 28 losing 42-6. The last time Weddington played Catholic in the playoffs was 2012 when the Warriors fell to the Cougars 41-14 on the road.
