State Championship Winter Recap 2021-2022

WEDDINGTON WINS 2ND STRAIGHT 4A TITLE

Weddington kept their winning streak alive, moving it to 49 straight games without a loss as they took out Panther Creek 76-58 in the 4A NCHSAA Men's Basketball Championship. 

Chase Lowe won Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player honors for the second year in a row, scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and picking up four steals in the game.

Kyle Frazier also made a big showing with 21 points and three rebounds on his way to being named the Most Outstanding Player award for Weddington.

Jack Werdann from Weddington was chosen as a 2022 4A Men’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award Winner.

PARKWOOD WINS GOLD, WEDDINGTON CAPTURES 3RD IN WRESTLING INVITATIONAL

At the fourth annual Women’s Wrestling Invitational at the Rise Indoor Sports Complex, two UCPS athletes took top honors.

Parkwood's Savannah Bramhall took home the 1st place medal in the 165 Lb weight class in her match with Laura Thompson of Cleveland.

Brianna DeLeon of Weddington prevailed over West Carteret's Kenley Riley for a 3rd place finish in the 132 Lb weight class.

UCPS WINS SIX GOLD TITLES, 3A & 4A MOW; FIVE MORE PLACE

UCPS athletes dominated the 3A & 4A NCHSAA Wrestling Championships capturing both the 3A & 4A Most Outstanding wrestler awards and a whopping six 1st place finishes:

In the 4A Division:
Noah Cauble, Piedmont (106 Lb)
Nathan Carnes, Porter Ridge (220 Lb)

4A Most Outstanding Wrestler: Nathan Carnes (Porter Ridge, 220 lb.)

In the 3A Division:
Kyle Montaperto, Central Academy (126 Lb)
Aiden Curry, Central Academy (160 Lb)
Brady Ross, Central Academy (182 Lb)
Cody Hardy, Parkwood (285Lb)

3A Most Outstanding Wrestler: Kyle Montaperto (Central Academy, 126 lb.) – Fourth Individual State Championship victory for Montaperto (2A 106 lb. in 2019, 2A 120 lb. in 2020 & 2021, and 3A 126 lb. in 2022.

Also placing in the 3A NCHSAA  Wrestling Championship:
5th Place - Kyle Simpson, Parkwood (106 Lb)
2nd Place - Elijah Harris, Central Academy (132 Lb)
3rd Place - Logan Fite, Central Academy (145 Lb)
5th Place - Caleb Simpson, Parkwood (152 Lb)
6th Place - Colin Lutz, Central Academy (152 Lb)

UCPS WINS SIX GOLD TITLES, 3A & 4A MOST OUTSTANDING; 5 OTHERS PLACE

Cuthbertson teams won both the 4A NCHSAA Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships while UCPS teams filed in behind.

The Cuthbertson women claimed their fifth consecutive team title, a 1000M 1st place finish for Stella Karnes, and a new all-Classification State Record in the 3200 Meter Relay.  Marvin Ridge Women's team took 2nd place in the team competition.  

Cutherbertson Men earned the Cavaliers’ first Indoor title in school history while winning 800M & 1600M Relays.  UCPS swept a hot contest between the men with Cuthbertson topping Porter Ridge by just one point 45-44, and Weddington close behind with 42 team points.

The Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2022 4A Women’s State Championship were Ava Studney from Cuthbertson and Aria Wegh from Marvin Ridge. The Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2022 4A Men’s State Championship were Brad Sweeter from Cuthbertson and Jacob Laney from Porter Ridge.
