July 22nd Update

This morning, the NCAA Eligibility Center released a statement regarding the virtual academy options and how it will affect NCAA eligibility for college bound athletes. The full statement can be found here. In summary, the NCAA has approved all virtual academies and if you choose to go with the UCPS Virtual Academy, your child will receive NCAA credit for the course. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Athletic Director.

July 17th Update

On Tuesday July 14th, UCPS released their reopening plan for school. Click here for the full release from UCPS. "Option D" is a virtual academy within UCPS. This fully virtual option is NOT recommended for any athlete who has any desire to participate in athletics at the college level. At this time, the NCAA Clearninghouse has not approved this virtual academy, therefore, you would not get credit for them. There is no current timeline on the approval process and if these will get approved prior to school starting. Again, since the registration runs from 7/20-7/26 for the virtual academy, we are not recommending any athlete to enroll in the virtual academy if they have interest in playing college athletics.  For more information about the NCAA Clearinghouse eligibility process and credit information, please click here. If you have any questions, please contact the Athletic Director.

On Wednesday July 15th, the NCHSAA released information regarding the return of athletics in North Carolina. The full article can be found here. In summary, fall sports are being delayed until at least September 1st and we will currently stay in Phase 1 of the NCHSAA Reopening Guidelines until further notice. They have also added a dead period of August 17th- August 22nd for all sports (first week of school).

On Friday July 17th, Union County Public Schools released the following guidelines regarding the continuation of workouts:

  • Fall Sports teams must scale back their current workouts to a maximum of two sessions per week.
  • Current pods may now be changed, if a coach desires to do so. At WHS, pods will be together for two weeks.
  • Beginning July 27th, winter and spring teams may start workouts at the discretion of the school's Athletic Director, following all NCHSAA and UCPS guidelines.
  • All workouts will continue to be optional for all.

At Weddington High School, we will continue to move on with workouts for some of our fall sports. At this time, the following sports will NOT conduct workouts: Women's Golf, Men's Soccer.

Coaches have and will create practice plans, with the approval of the Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer. These are subject to change, given new updates and guidelines from the NCHSAA and UCPS. These plans will be communicated to families by the coach. If you have any sport specific questions, please contact your coach.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the workout guidelines and policies in place, please contact the Athletic Director.

Details from the UCPS release:

The district has been working over the past month to determine an appropriate date to allow our students, coaches and other personnel back onto our campuses to begin the resumption of athletic participation in preparation for the upcoming fall season. We have put together a task force involving principals, athletic directors, nurses, Novant health professionals, and other central services staff, including our legal team to help develop a plan for the return of athletics. In devising this plan, the health and safety of our students has been our top priority. After reviewing the guidelines just released from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA), UCPS has set July 6th as our date to allow athletics to return to our campuses. This date will also apply to our middle school booster club sports and is subject to change if there are adjustments from state or local agencies.

All workouts will be conducted in compliance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), NCHSAA and local health department guidelines for athletic participation. Initially, only fall sports athletes will be allowed to return.

Union County Public Schools will use the next few weeks to ensure that schools have the necessary PPE equipment and that coaches are trained to follow the recently released guidelines. The NCHSAA will still honor the June 29-July 4 dead period, where no participation is allowed statewide. However, the 2nd NCHSAA dead period July 20-26 has been eliminated.

May 8th Update

All spring sports have been cancelled. More information will be determined regarding summer workouts in the coming weeks.

During this time, our athletic complexes are CLOSED to our community stakeholders and our student-athletes. Please see below for a full statement regarding facility use:

Warrior and Weddington Community members: While school is closed due to Covid-19, our athletic complex is also completely closed. At no time should students or community members be using our facility or be on the grounds of WHS. UCPS Building Services and local law enforcement will continue to monitor the complex at this time because it is important to keep our beautiful campus safe and well cared for at all times.

March 24th Update

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has extended their suspension of interscholastic athletics until at least May 18th, in conjunction with school being closed until May 15th.

During this time, our athletic complexes are CLOSED to our community stakeholders and our student-athletes. Please see below for a full statement regarding facility use:

A message from the NCHSAA Commissioner, Que Tucker:

The NCHSAA Board of Directors and staff will use the next few weeks to weigh our future decisions based on the new directions given by Governor Cooper, other government leaders, and organizations charged with public health and safety during this unprecedented time.  Such decisions will include the possible resumption of spring sports’ competition and the possibility of holding the state basketball championships.

While we remain hopeful that we will be able to resume competition, particularly for our senior student-athletes, we also recognize the need to protect the health and safety of our students, coaches and the communities we serve.

March 12th Update

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has moved to suspend all interscholastic athletics beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020, through Monday, April 6, 2020. The NCHSAA Board of Directors will assess this situation regularly over the next few weeks. This includes all workouts, skill development, practices, and contests. Effective immediately, all games, practices, weight room sessions, off season workouts and team meetings/gatherings have been cancelled. All facilities on our campus will be closed. At no time can we have a student-led practice or gathering on our campus. There is a lot of uncertainty right now with how the rest of the sports will pan out. Once more information is available, we will communicate that to you all. In the meantime, please remain calm and positive, we will get through this! Thank you for your patience and support!

Go Warriors!
