Porter Ridge's football season ended last night in Greensboro against Grimsley in a 22-17 defeat in the 4A Western quarterfinals.
After trailing 22-6 at halftime, the Pirates' defense began to smother a Grimsley offense that came into the contest scoring 42-points a game. One could sense a second-half momentum swing as Grimsley's offense consistently stalled.
Senior Dylan Burdette added to that momentum with an electric 32-yard touchdown run at 6:20 of the third quarter. A successful two-point conversion pulled Porter Ridge closer, 22-14.
Another strong Pirate defensive hold forced a Grimsley punt giving the ball back to Porter Ridge on their opponent's 23-yard line.
Unfortunately, Grimsley's defense answered the call holding the Pirates to a 35-yard FG by Braeden McAlister at 1:28 of the third quarter, Porter Ridge trailing, 22-17.
The Pirates had two opportunities in the fourth quarter to go-ahead, but a blatant pass interference in the endzone ended one drive, and a fumble on Grimsley's 37 with under a minuted ended the game.
It was an incredible second half of football for Porter Ridge. The effort and passion from both sides of the ball were evident in every critical second-half possession.
