Holy Trinity defeated the Weddington Wildcats, 16-8 in the 6th-grade championship game on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats fell short of their dream of capturing the title, but it was not for the lack of will. These Wildcats entered the playoffs two weeks ago as the number four seed and knocked off #5 Monroe and previously undefeated #1 Forest Hills to get to the championship game.
Those two playoff games served the Wildcats well on Saturday. Trailing 14-0 after a Trinity score at 4:49 of the fourth quarter, most teams would have folded, but these 'Cats have no quit.
Thirty-nine seconds after the Bulldogs' touchdown, Weddington's RB (#10) burst through the line, read his blocks, and sprinted to the endzone, 65-yds untouched very much like the Weddington 5-star recruit, Will Shipley, has been doing this year at the varsity level. The Wildcats were trailing 14-8, and now we have ourselves a ballgame.
The final four minutes and every possession is critical. On Holy Trinity's next possession, Weddington's defense took advantage of a botched snap, forcing a fumble and recovering on Trinity's 35-yard line.
Unfortunately for Wildcat nation, they could not take advantage of the turnover, credit to a Trinty defense that buckled down in crunch time.
Congratulations to Holy Trinity on their championship and Weddington's Wildcats for showing all of us the importance of not giving up and fighting until the end.
