8th-grade Marvin Ridge knocked off unbeaten Forest Hills, 32-6, to advance to the 8th-grade championship game on Saturday.
It was the third game I covered at Marvin Ridge High School and the third consecutive game in which lower seed teams upset higher seeds at Maverick Stadium.
The Mavericks entered the postseason with the top-ranked defense (points allowed), and they did not disappoint, suffocating a solid Forest Hills running game.
The Jackets too came in with a strong D but struggled with a Maverick passing attack that eventually made the Jacket's defense vulnerable to the run.
What lies ahead for Marvin Ridge (8-2) is a championship matchup against the #1 seed Holy Trinity Bulldogs (9-0). This Trinity team won the 7th-grade championship last year, so the Mavs will have their hands full. These two division rivals met on the last day of the regular season with Holy Trinity winning, 28-14.
If we have learned anything from this playoff season, anything can happen. Marvin Ridge has a confident defense and a balanced offense that can put up points. It should be a great 8th-grade championship game.
