Marvin Ridge 7th grade middle school defeated Porter Ridge 7th grade, 8-6, in a classic defensive struggle.
The Mavericks came into the playoffs as the 6th seed against a Porter Ridge team that earned a bye and the #2 seed. The Pirates earned their playoff position thanks to having the second-best offense and third-best defense in 7th grade, but it was the 7th-grade Mav defense that rose to the occasion, containing a strong PR running game.
The young Mavs defense was fast in pursuit of Pirate ball carriers and wrapped up in large numbers. The secondary also did a great job with coverage and knockdowns when Porter Ridge went to the air.
The Porter Ridge offense scored over 28-points during the regular season but had trouble finding the end zone on Saturday afternoon.
Other teams might have been disheartened and frustrated, but PR kept their heads down and had a chance to go-ahead in the closing minutes. Unfortunately for the Pirates, they were turned away by a strong Mav goalline defense that forced PR to kick a field goal.
The kick was wide to the left, securing the Maverick victory and a trip next week to Monroe HS, where they will play Holy Trinity for the 7th-grade championship.
