Weddington smothered a Marvin Ridge football team, 52-7, to remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0.
At the start of the game, it seemed we were all in for a great night of football. After surrendering a methodical, 8-minute 42-second clock-eating, opening scoring drive to Marvin Ridge, Weddington was down 7-0.
It was the first time in conference play that the Warriors' defense surrendered a touchdown. The deficit didn't last long.
On Weddington's first offensive play from scrimmage, junior running back Will Shipley, the county's first five-star athlete, erased the margin with an 80-yard dash into the endzone, virtually untouched.
After a blocked Marvin Ridge punt, Weddington punched in another TD courtesy of Shipley 2-yard plunge. The Warriors were up 14-7, at the close of the first quarter with the lead and all the momentum.
Will Shipley went onto score one more time and now has 22-touchdowns on the season scoring once every five times he touches the ball.
After the game, I caught up with Shipley and Weddington's head coach Andy Capone.
