Rarely, when two teams meet with undefeated records at any level of football does the game live up to the pregame expectations. That was not the case late Saturday afternoon in Marshville when 8th grade Forest Hills defeated Marvin Ridge, 16-14.
Both teams entered the game with identical 4-0 records. The Mavericks with one of the best offenses in 8th grade and the best defense matched up against a Yellow Jackets' team with the second-best offense and defense.
The game lived up to the hype. Throughout the first quarter, both teams traded possessions, defense taking center stage. It wasn't until under five minutes of the second quarter that Marvin Ridge broke through with a beautiful touchdown pass at the 4:41 mark. The point after was missed, but the visiting Mavs grabbed the all-important lead (6-0) that would carry through into halftime.
The game's second half started very much like the first half. Defenses were stingy, and offenses struggled to find yards until late in the third quarter.
Below, all the action and scores from the opening kickoff until the final whistle of the best middle school game I have seen from start to finish this season.
