When Matthew Bennett arrived on the campus of Monroe High School, the expectations were high. A lot of conjecture and projections over the summer leading up to the first game of the season.
On Saturday night, the talk ended, and the actions spoke. Monroe rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Anson 21-6 to pull off a 35-24 victory at home.
Bennett led the way all night despite taking a physical pounding. The senior QB threw for 145 yards and four touchdowns including the go-ahead and game-winning rushing TD late in the fourth quarter.
Shaleak "Punch" Knotts, also had himself a game. Monroe's sophomore wideout with 10 D-1 offers had two receiving touchdowns, two interceptions, and a fumbled punt recovery.
Monroe (1-0) and will host Kings Mountain (1-0) on Friday night.
