Weddington fell one game short of the final four in the Powerade 7-on-7 Invitational with a 24-19 loss to Tiger Nation Camden (Woodrow Wilson HS, NJ) on Saturday afternoon.
The double-elimination bracket play started well for the Warriors. They ripped off three consecutive wins including a late morning affair against a local, traditional powerhouse, Rock Hill South Pointe.
Things didn’t go as well for Weddington in the afternoon session. Under a blazing hot sun, the Warriors lost a close one to Woodward Academy (GA), 19-16. A few minutes later, Weddington was back on the field against Tiger Nation Camden. The Warriors built a 19-3 lead but last year’s champion fought back to score 21 unanswered points to secure the victory and knocking Weddington out of the tournament.
Rising junior, Dante Casciola started all five games, but rising sophomore Grady Brosterhous did get reps in most if not all games on Saturday.
Weddington finished as one of the top teams in the powerhouse 32-team field with an overall tournament record of 9-3.
