On Friday and Saturday, Weddington High School competed in the annual Powerade 7-on-7 Invitational at Matthews Sportsplex. The 7-on-7 event featured 32 high schools from 19 states.
The teams compete in group play on day one intending to achieve a high seed for double-elimination bracket play on Saturday.
Weddington achieved their goal by wrapping up Friday with a 6-1 record.
Coach Andy Capone needs to replace quarterback Whitner Litton who graduated, and the three QBs competing for the open starting position all saw playing time.
Dante Casciola, the rising junior who went 3-0 starting three games last season, started four games and received most of the reps during group play. The rising sophomore Grady Brosterhous started two games, and rising senior Dustin Mercer who saw most action at wide receiver started one game in the afternoon.
Capone has a tough decision ahead. Casciola has varsity experience and delivers positive results. Brosterhous has good size and shows flashes, and although Mercer started only one game, he is very athletic playing most of the day at the wide receiver position.
