On June 21& 22 Sun Valley competed in the Cam Newton 7v7 tournament down at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It was my first look at these Spartans in the post-Sam Howell era.
Twenty-six high schools competed in the first day of group play. Sun Valley finished day one ranked 12th out of the 26-team field with a 3-2-1 record.
I was in attendance for bracket play (double elimination) on day two. The Spartans lost to R.J. Reynolds in overtime, 33-30. In their second game, Valley faced a familiar foe, conference rival, Charlotte Catholic. Catholic scored on their first possession and didn't look back winning 28-14. The loss eliminated Sun Valley from the tournament.
The two quarterbacks, Jacob Bowman (rising Junior) and Carson Black (incoming Freshman) got in some good reps and worked on their timing with receivers, all great experience. Granted it's not real football, but that matters little because few can stop Valley's wide receiver and D1 recruit Gavin Blackwell on Friday nights either.
Check out this dime thrown by Bowman to Blackwell on the first day of action.
Sun Valley wrapped their tournament with a 3-4-1 record, not bad for a team playing for the first time in four years without Sam Howell against some of the best competition from North and South Carolina.
Check out the highlights below from the second day of action.
