Games between Porter Ridge and Sun Valley rarely disappoint. Last night was no exception. Sun Valley defeated Porter Ridge 42-41 in a thrilling comeback victory decided in overtime.
The Pirates built a fourteen point lead to close out the third quarter when junior quarterback Grayson McCall scored on a seven-yard touchdown run, his fourth rushing TD of the night.
A two touchdown lead is rarely safe when Sun Valley QB Sam Howell has a whole quarter to play with in front of him. Howell wasted little time in leading the comeback, calling his own number and scoring on a 30-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
The Sun Valley defense led by the team’s leading tackler Roy Artololazaga did its part by keeping Porter Ridge from stringing together first downs.
Howell tied the game with a one-yard run with 4:09 remaining in regulation. It was the junior quarterback’s third rushing touchdown of the night in which he gained over 200 yards on the ground.
In overtime, Howell found senior wide receiver Anthony Marple in the end zone for the touchdown. Sun Valley led 42-35.
On Porter Ridge’s first possession in OT, Malcolm Hines, one of the leading rushers in the county took the pitch and scored pulling the Pirates within one.
Decision time. Go for the point after attempt that was blocked twice earlier in the game or go for the two-point conversion and the win.
Porter Ridge was successful on two prior attempts in the game with their 2-point try so it seemed to be the right call. Unfortunately, their third attempt fell short, and the Spartans came away with the dramatic home victory.
After the game, Roy Artolozaga and Sam Howell discussed the big win.
